Penticton 2009

Hello Everyone, I know this post is a little delayed, but here are the photos from our trip to Penticton BC.

Let's see, oh yeah, so Kyle and I drove down to Penticton from Edmonton which is about a 12 hour drive. On the way there, there were massive forest fires along the 97C near Kelowna, which almost brought our trip to a halt. But it did not! Here are some pics.

And yes, that does say it's 37 degrees outside... which wasn't the high, it got up to 39 later that same day!

My parents, sister and Brady flew into Vancouver and drove across BC to meet us there. They saw trees an mountains on the way there. Pretty much the same thing we saw.

The first day we get there we decide to rent a boat and go tubing. Go figure, in the Okanagan Valley, where it never rains, it rains! So after a half hour of boating, we were chased off the lake by lightning.

That's ok though, because wine tours don't require sunlight! So off we went winery hopping. Unfortunately my dad and Brady didn't find it as entertaining as we did. Oh, do I love Soaring Eagle's White Merlot --- definitely recommend stopping in there if you ever get a chance.

We then had dinner at Theo's restaurant, the best greek food in town. The food was delicious (sorry I meant DELUCIOUS for you Aimee!). To make the evening more interesting, we sat next to Pat Quinn and yes he alternates food chews and gum chews.

The next day we were blessed with gorgeous sunshine -- the whole reason for visiting Penticton! In the morning, we went tubing down the canal and it was great. We then spent the afternoon on the beach. I cut my little toe on something in the sand and then couldn't play frisbee anymore :( I know, I'm a wuss!

After, we played a game of minigolf. Totally awesome! They even had little fans with misters to keep us cool while golfing.

Next was a bbq dinner back at out apartment/condo we rented. Here was the view:

That evening, we decided to crank the tap wide open, liquor wise, that is. Good times.

The next morning, we then decided to go hiking up the side of a hill (for westerners) or mountain (for those of you from Ontario). So when we left it was nice and sunny... until we got to the top of the hill. Then the storm of the year hit us with full force and fury. It hailed the size of quarters and down-poured to the point where you couldn't keep your eyes open. We were totally drenched. My toes were swimming in my shoes. To top things off, as we are coming down the mountain, the trail begins to wash out from the runoff from the top of the hill! Watch the video.

That night, the gang headed back to Vancouver to catch their flights, and then Kyle and I were off the following morning to head back to Edmonton.

Good times! And that is why I have ranked Penticton in my top 3 favourite places in Canada :)

Visiting Sara and Ken

Hi Everyone!
Sorry I haven't been posting as much this year. I haven't been traveling as much since we don't have very many 4 day weekends anymore. This past weekend, I went down to Okotoks (near Calgary) to see Sara and Ken. The first day Sara and I went down to the local rodeo. I'm sad I didn't bring my camera. We saw this one guy fly something like 10 to 20 feet in the air by the bull he just fell off of. It's far more scarier live than on TV that's for sure. The next day, Sara, Ken and I went down to some little town south of Lethbridge to visit Sara's aunt and uncle. The next day we went tubing down the Milk River and camped out at Writing-on-Stone, which was really awesome. There were hoodoos and native writing on the stone.
Here are some pictures!

Oh... The weather in Alberta...

Hello everyone,
I finally made it back from the field today because of bad weather... you guessed it. It's snowing. I woke up this morning to find a blizzard outside my window. This is quite a change from the 17-18 degree weather we've had for the past week. Even the willows and birch trees are confused and are already budding.
Here are some photos of what it looked like outside this morning, which is probably the first time I've ever seen snow during the May 2-4 weekend.

That's it for now. The internet here is painfully slow, so I can only do so much.
I'll try to post again when I get a chance.

Field Season #2

Hi Everyone!
It's that time again, May is almost here!
I will be leaving Ottawa for the field site on May 3rd. I will try to keep up with my posts again this year, but like last year, the posts will be every two weeks.
This summer, I intend on visiting the Okanagan again, only this time my parents will be there to join me. I will also take a couple of trips down to Calgary to visit my friends Sara and Ken. And last but not least, I hope to see Suzanne in BC and the beautiful rocky mountains. Now, Brady has said that he's going to come and visit me sometime this summer and hopefully that happens.

One more field season, meaning 16 weeks of bugs, camp fires, little to no showers and sleeping in tents. I will post more photos of camp life. I'm kind of excited and worried all at the same time (in terms of camp life) since I know this summer will be completely different than last year and I'm not exactly sure what to expect.

I will miss all of you,
See you in the Fall.
K.

Washington DC

Brady and I went down to the states to buy my dad a guitar. On the way back, we stopped by Washington DC to do the tourist thing.

Sky Diving!

So I went sky diving with my relatives back in September and I figure I should post some pictures. This wasn't a part of my trip out west, but I figured it should be available for all to see as PROOF!
It was great! I would recommend it to anyone, especially if you're having some sort of mid-life crisis. It'll get the fluids going again :)

Penticton BC (August 2008)

Hi Everyone, I know it's been a while but I figured I should at least post the pictures from Penticton BC and the Okanagan. We had a great time even though it took a little over 12 hours to get down there. It went from being 15 degrees in Jasper to a lovely 34 degrees in the valley and the next day it was 38! As soon as I stepped out of the car, I felt my skin burn. After a quick trip to Walmart and an oversized spray can of sunscreen, I was able to stand the sun again.
This trip was the highlight of my summer and I hope to go again in 2009.
